PART III: Process Summary Description

1)      Downloaded data from R drive to S drive and unzipped data
2)      Opened ArcCatalog to view data
3)      Opened ArcMap and dragged required data from ArcCatalog to ArcMap
4)      Under Selection menu chose Select by Attributes tool to subset Mexico from Americas_Admin
5)      Right-clicked on Americas_Admin then selected Data and then Export Data
6)      Exported data to my folder as a shapefile called Mex_states and added layer to map
7)      Right-clicked World_Countries selected Properties and then Labels tab
8)      Enabled Label features in this layer with the Field Label CNTRY_NAME  selected
9)      Clicked Symbol and changed style to Country 2 and font size to 12
10)   Right-clicked World_Countries then Convert Labels to Annotation so I could change Mexico font to stand out more than the rest of the country names
11)   Double-clicked  symbology for World_Countries  and changed to an outline width of 2 and Light Apple for fill
12)   Changed symbology for Mex_states to graduated color by population quantities schema with 6 classes
13)   Went to Layout View and finished adding required items to map
14)   Saved map to GISCarto_map1_BED.mxd
15)   Exported map to GISCarto_map1_BED.jpg
16)   Continuing on with this map, added the additional layers required
17)   Selected Properties and under Symbology, then Unique Values under Categories and chose Rank in the value field to select the Primary and Major values
18)   Changes line style for display
19)   Performed the same procedure to select Federal roads under mex_roads
20)   Changed mex-rails symbol to Railroad style for display
21)   Edited the Labels Properties for the mex_urban layer to define classes of features and label each class differently by selecting all urban areas with a population of more than 1,000,000 in a new Million class
22)   Switched to Layout View, set scale to 1:5,000,000 and panned to area shown in example
23)   Finished editing items in Layout View to finalize map
24)   Saved map to GISCarto_map2_BED.mxd
25)   Exported map to GISCarto_map2_BED.jpg
26)   To make Urban Areas names legible, converted labels to annotations to be able to edit fonts independently of each other.
27)   Added inset map to show area shown on map referenced to a larger area
28)   Saved map to GISCarto_map3_BED.mxd
29)   Exported map to GISCarto_map3_BED.jpg
30)   Continue on to map 3, elevation map
31)   Removed New Data Frame and all layers except World_countries
32)   Added mex_elev two times, one is classified and one is stretched symbology
33)   After viewing different color schemes in both, deleted the stretched symbology layer
34)   Switched to Map View and finished editing items in Layout View to finalize map
35)   Exported map to GISCarto_map3_BED.jpg
36)   Backed up all data
